SLS is a general practice law firm. Our attorneys only practice in Iowa and do not specialize is any particular area. If your issue is not addressed below, or if you are uncertain about whether we can assist you, contact SLS for more information.

Tenants’ rights, including lease reviews

Landlord/tenant disputes are our most common practice area. We have a strong reputation for aiding students by holding landlords accountable. Common reasons students come to our office include:

  • Lease reviews
  • Lease violations
  • Security deposit disputes
  • Lease termination
  • Maintenance requests
  • Eviction defense

Criminal defense, including alcohol-related violations

SLS commonly assists students who have been charged with misdemeanors and low-level felonies, including PAULA (Possession of Alcohol Under Legal Age), public intoxication, OWI (Operating While Intoxicated), In Bar After 10 p.m., fake IDs, criminal mischief, theft, assault, interference with official acts, public urination, and possession of controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

If you have been charged with a crime or if you are worried that you might be charged with a crime, SLS can help.

Iowa has limited expungement laws, but SLS can assist students in expunging PAULA and public intoxication charges, select other misdemeanors, and cases in which all other charges were dismissed or you were found not guilty. Expungement forms and information is available in the Expungement section of our Know the Law guide.
